Day Treatment Centers for Health
and Living
The Austin Center for
Health and Living (Northwest) and
the Max Robinson Center for Health and Living (Southeast)
provide day treatment services for people living with HIV/AIDS.
The Centers provide a supportive community where clients can
receive medical/nursing care, counseling, socialization and
other services. Clients attend daily groups that address
addictions, health education, mental illness, skills building
and general support. In addition, two nutritionally
balanced meals and transportation are provided each day.
The Centers have enhanced daily
programming. Depending on the client's needs, his or
her schedule will include groups that focus on one or more
of the following areas: substance abuse (using recovery, relapse
prevention and harm reduction techniques), complimentary therapies
(including massage, hydrotherapy, psychodrama and strech/relaxation),
mental health (addressing the needs of individuals with serious
mental illness), health education (focusing on adherence issues
and maximizing wellness) and independent living skills (teaching
cooking, budgeting, communication and assertiveness and stress
management). The Centers will continue to provide field
trips, two meals per day, transportation and many opportunities
for socialization.
How to make a Referral for
Day Treatment
The Austin Center:
Clients of the Austin Center must
be 18 years of age or older; have a primary diagnosis of HIV/AIDS;
be free from communicable tuberculosis; and have DC Medicaid
(some exceptions will be made).
Complete the Austin
Center Referral Form (PDF document)
and fax it to (202)797-3531. If the application is not
accompanied by a recent chest x-ray (within the past three
months), the Austin Center nursing staff may schedule an appointment
to obtain an x-ray as evidence that the potential client is
free of TB.
The referral source will be contacted
and an interview will be scheduled upon review of the application.
Under most circumstances, the client can then begin to attend
the Austin Center.
