Status of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in communities of color
- It is estimated that one in every 20 adults in the District of Columbia is infected with HIV.
- DC has the highest rate of new AIDS cases per capita in the United States – a rate 12 times the national average.
- In DC, 81 percent of all AIDS cases are among African-Americans. African-American women account for 93 percent of AIDS cases among women in the District.
- From 2001-2006, African-Americans and Latinos comprised 85 percent of newly reported HIV cases among young adults 13-29 years of age in DC.
- More than 30,000 people in the Washington Metropolitan region live with HIV and more than 15,000 live with AIDS.
How is Whitman-Walker Clinic addressing the epidemic?
- By providing comprehensive outpatient medical services, including dental care.
- With two HIV Mobile Testing Units used for testing and outreach within targeted, at-risk populations, including communities of color.
- By administering more than 13,000 free anonymous and confidential HIV tests annually.
- By ensuring the provision of culturally competent, bilingual services and client advocacy to better serve Latino and African-American communities.
